Moving to the UK: Practical Logistics for Americans
Sequence immigration, banking, healthcare, driving and arrival costs for a manageable move from America to the UK.

A successful move to the UK depends on arranging the right immigration permission, keeping access to money, establishing healthcare and planning for the costs due before you settle in.
Several points need particular care. An ETA is for permitted visits, a US driving licence generally cannot simply be exchanged for a British one, and an app-based bank account is subject to eligibility checks rather than guaranteed approval.
The most useful approach is to organise these tasks in sequence: establish your right to move, calculate the upfront costs, prepare your documents and then arrange the services you will use after arrival.
Check Whether You Need an ETA or a Visa
Americans travelling on a US passport generally need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA, for a short visit unless an exemption applies.
People who already have permission to live, work or study in the UK normally do not need an ETA. Check your circumstances before applying rather than assuming everyone entering on a US passport needs one.
Apply Before Travelling
The current ETA fee is £20. Applications can be made through the official UK ETA app or online.
Government guidance says decisions usually arrive within a day but can take up to three working days. Apply ahead of travel and wait for approval before setting off.
An ETA does not provide permission to relocate or take ordinary employment. If your purpose is to make the UK your home, establish the appropriate immigration route first. Visitors cannot use frequent or successive visits to live in the UK for extended periods.
Driving: Plan for a UK Test Rather Than a Simple Exchange
For an American moving to England, Scotland or Wales, a valid full US car licence generally allows driving for up to 12 months after becoming resident, subject to the applicable conditions.
The United States is not on the published list of countries with a Great Britain licence-exchange agreement. Most US licence holders therefore need to obtain a provisional licence and pass the required British tests to continue driving.
Start Before the 12-Month Period Runs Out
Do not leave the process until your initial driving entitlement is about to expire. Allow time to understand the application requirements, prepare for the theory test and arrange practical tuition and testing.
If you have not obtained the necessary entitlement when the initial period ends, you cannot simply continue driving independently on your US licence. Check the rules applying to your provisional licence and circumstances.
Northern Ireland has a separate licensing process. Use its specific guidance if that is where you will live.
Prepare for Driving on the Left
Driving on the left requires adjustment even if you have many years of experience. Familiarisation lessons can help you practise positioning, junctions and roundabouts before relying on a car for daily journeys.
Read the applicable road rules and confirm insurance cover before driving. The Highway Code for Great Britain requires keeping left unless signs or markings indicate otherwise.
Opening a UK Bank Account
Monzo and Starling are options to investigate, but neither should be presented as a guaranteed account that opens immediately with minimal documentation.
Apply once you meet the bank’s requirements, and keep another way to pay for essentials while the application is assessed.
Monzo: A UK Address Matters
Monzo states that applicants need to live in the UK and have a UK address. You do not necessarily need to be UK tax resident, but you must provide the information the bank requests about your tax position.
Before applying, check the current identification and address requirements. Do not assume temporary accommodation will automatically satisfy every verification request.
Starling: Residence and Verification Checks Apply
Starling requires applicants to be UK residents with the right to reside in the UK, alongside its other eligibility conditions. It also carries out verification checks.
US citizenship does not automatically prevent an eligible person from holding an account. Starling explains that US-person status can require account information to be reported through HMRC to the IRS. Provide accurate citizenship and tax information when asked.
Keep Access to Funds During the Transition
Before leaving America, check how you will pay for accommodation, food and transport while establishing UK banking.
Confirm overseas card fees, transfer arrangements and how you will receive security codes or contact your existing bank. Avoid making your first essential payments dependent on a new account opening by a particular date.
Register With a GP Soon After Arrival
A GP, or General Practitioner, is the usual starting point for ongoing medical care, prescription reviews and many specialist referrals.
Register promptly once you know where you will be living, particularly if you take regular medication. However, GP registration is not the entry point to every NHS service and does not, by itself, establish entitlement to free hospital treatment.
What You Need in England
NHS guidance states that you do not need identification, proof of address, proof of immigration status or an existing NHS number to register with a GP surgery in England.
A practice may have a geographical boundary or be unable to accept new patients. If one cannot register you, investigate another serving your area.
Use the relevant national guidance if moving to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Bring a medication list and useful medical records from your US clinicians. Ask the practice how to arrange an initial review rather than assuming ongoing prescriptions will transfer automatically.
Confirm When NHS Entitlement Begins
Where the Immigration Health Surcharge applies, NHS access generally begins when your visa starts, provided the surcharge has been paid.
Some services remain chargeable, including certain prescriptions, dental treatment and eye care. Check your entitlement separately from the practical step of joining a GP practice.
How Much Should You Budget Upfront?
The suggested £6,000–£8,000+ is not a dependable allowance for every move. Household size, visa route, permission length and housing costs can change the total substantially.
Calculate immigration charges for each person before adding accommodation and moving expenses.
Immigration Health Surcharge
The standard adult IHS rate is £1,035 per year, generally payable upfront for the relevant period of permission.
For two adults each charged for exactly three years, that is £6,210 before visa application fees or housing costs. Partial-year charging rules can affect the final amount. Reduced rates and exemptions also apply.
Visa Application Fees
Fees depend on the route and application circumstances.
For example, the published standard overseas Skilled Worker application fee for permission of up to three years is £819 per person. Two adults each paying that fee, plus exactly three years of standard-rate IHS, would have combined immigration charges of £7,848.
That illustration already approaches the top of the suggested budget before rent, deposits, flights or shipping. It is not a quote for every Skilled Worker household.
Rental Deposits and Initial Accommodation
For covered private tenancies in England, the tenancy deposit is generally capped at five weeks’ rent where annual rent is below £50,000, or six weeks where it is £50,000 or more.
A permitted holding deposit can be up to one week’s rent. Confirm how it will be refunded or credited so you do not count it twice in your budget.
Rental rules differ across the UK. Check the requirements for your destination and tenancy before paying.
Allow separately for temporary accommodation, initial rent, travel, moving belongings and essential household purchases. Keep any visa maintenance-funds requirement distinct from money you expect to spend.
A Practical Order for Your Move
Before departure, confirm immigration permission, calculate each applicant’s charges and prepare identification, financial and medical documents.
After arrival, establish your address, apply for suitable banking and register with a GP. If you will drive, begin the licensing process early enough to preserve your ability to travel independently.
If you are preparing to relocate to the UK, contact Vantage Point Europe to discuss your arrival timetable and the support you need. Coordinating housing, banking, healthcare and transport before departure can help you build a realistic budget and a manageable first few weeks.
